The live entertainment industry has been one of the hardest hit since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Packing music lovers into venues to hear their favourite musicians play simply hasn't been possible for the past 15+ months.
It means promoters have had to get creative to continue bringing live music to the masses.
2020 saw the launch of 'Hotels Live', dubbed as 'Canada's first-ever hotel balcony concert series'. It gave fans a chance to experience concerts safely from the balcony of their own private hotel room.
Outdoor shows were hosted on the rooftop stage at Ramada Plaza Calgary Downtown and when the dreaded Calgary winter started to set in, the Delta Calgary South was able to hold indoor events with room balconies overlooking the Atrium Events Centre.
The shows were a hit and have continued into 2021.
Another idea that has gained some traction over the course of the pandemic is drive-in concerts. Piggy-backing on the success of the resurgence of the drive-in movie, live music enthusiasts can take in some entertainment safely from their vehicles.
The Grey Eagle Resort and Casino believes 'the show must go on' and is hosting concerts at its outdoor drive-in which features a stage and four large screens.
As restrictions start to ease, many artists are now announcing more "normal" tours starting later this year.
In the meantime, Calgary has some pretty cool options to check out live music in a unique way in the coming weeks:
Hotels Live - Upcoming hotel balcony concerts at Ramada Plaza Calgary Downtown and Delta Calgary South include tributes to Johnny Cash and Metallica.
Grey Eagle Drive-In - Upcoming drive-in concerts include Men Without Hats, Wannabe: A Spice Girls Tribute, and Platinum Blonde.
Drive-In at Telus Spark - Upcoming drive-in live performances include Calgary Rise Up, Le Cirque De La Nuit, and The Hire Heels Picture Show.
