There’s a new show in town, and it brings the excitement of the Calgary Stampede to life all year long. Sam Centre opened last fall and it promises to explore the “excitement and emotion, twists and turns, challenges and celebrations” of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

Sam Centre isn’t just a static museum of no-touch artefacts outlining the history of the event. A lot of that information can be found online anyway. This take on the festival looks at the people who made it possible, from the founders to the competitors, the youth who benefit from many of Stampede’s programs, the long history with Indigenous peoples, and the 3000+ volunteers who make it all possible. It looks at the humanity of Stampede, and the community that comes together to make it happen year after year.

Central to the experience is Stampede Sensations. This 270°multimedia show has dynamic, life-sized motion pictures as well as all the sounds, emotions, and sensations of the big event. Top competitors reveal the excitement and preparation that goes into the competition, a rodeo clown reveals the dangers and exhilarating nature of his job, and a young drummer brims with anticipation for the parade performance. It captures the building excitement of the festival, even in the dead of winter. The drumming of hooves, the cheers of the crowd, and the enthusiasm of the performers creates an atmosphere where you can’t help but be swept away in the excitement of the show.

There are also physical experiences that everyone can enjoy. Ever wondered what a teepee feels like? Have you ever held a lariat in your hands? Do you know what the cowboys use to hold on to a bronc? The tactile displays allow visitors to actually feel many facets of Stampede. What's more, you can create a character to add to the Stampede parade or even put yourself in a historic Stampede poster. The multi-sensory displays take this exhibition to a new level. It's so much more engaging than just looking at a display. Likewise, it's so much more personal than watching from the grandstand.

There are still artefacts, including vintage saddles owned and ridden by the key players who got Stampede off the ground. Outfits and hats worn by influential people throughout the years decorate a colourful display. Moreover, there are Stampede posters from years gone by, including one from 1930! Sam Centre’s impressive archives also hold numerous artefacts for safe keeping, research, and future displays.

Personally, I was drawn to the saddles. Unsurprising to those who know me, the history of saddle making and leatherwork has always piqued my interest. As someone who’s spent so much time in one over the years, I see these historical artefacts and imagine riding through their history. It's kind of like seeing the world through someone’s shoes – seeing the world from another’s saddle. The tales about George Lane, Tom Three Persons, Flores LaDue, Ben Calf Robe, and Guy Weadick brought the stories of those first stampedes to life.

Even the dining at Sam Centre is an exciting affair. Maisie Eatery serves specialty coffee and tea with exquisite baking that will make your mouth water before you even take your first bite. The most difficult part is choosing what tasty treat you're going to enjoy! The dining area is a bright, open space with large windows. The eatery is also open longer the museum, so you can enjoy a tasty snack, even if the museum itself is closed.

Get ready to experience the Calgary Stampede any day of the year with the exciting new experiences at Sam Centre. It's time to cowboy up and rediscover the excitement of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
